
The IELTS Intensive Preparation Course with Frobisher English is a 5 week intensive online course which will help prepare you to take the IELTS test.

5 Week Intensive Course
4 x 1.5 hour lessons per week. (6 hours per week) Monday – Thursday.
Total 30 hours of online studying, plus homework exercises.
What is IELTS?
• IELTS is the International English Language Testing System.
• IELTS is a test that assesses proficiency / ability in English
• It is recognized worldwide
• IELTS is managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English
• Many universities and colleges and career positions require an IELTS certificate at a certain level to allow someone to join a course or start a job.
• Each year approximately 4 million people take the IELTS test
• The test examines a student’s ability in four areas:
Listening (30 minutes)
Reading (60 minutes)
Writing (60 minutes)
Speaking (11-14 minutes)
There are two IELTS tests – The Academic English test and General English test.
• IELTS Academic: For people wanting to study in a native English speaking country or for professional roles.
• IELTS General Training: For people wanting to migrate and live / work in an English speaking country.
• IELTS examinations are available as a paper based or a computer based
Course Content
The course will focus on a different skill each day.
Monday – Listening
Tuesday – Reading
Wednesday – Writing
Thursday – Speaking
In each session we will practice the skills you need to be able to take the test, including:
Listening Section
• Matching tasks and note completion with visual aids.
• Listening to a variety of accents used in the listening tests, British, American, Australian, and Canadian
• Following conversations and understanding the context of conversation
• Understanding the context and relationships between speakers.
• Listening for specific ideas and information
Reading Section
• Understanding Visual Aids: Students will need to interpret graphs, charts, and diagrams.
• Skimming and scanning techniques.
• Reading academic articles for Academic IELTS
• Reading a variety of articles (magazines, online, newspapers) on general subjects for General Training.
• Looking at vocabulary in context
• Practicing comprehension exercises
• Understanding connecting words
Writing Section
• Number of Tasks: 2 (Task 1: Report/Letter, Task 2: Essay).
• Practicing writing reports and letters (Task 1)
• Practicing writing essays (Task 2)
• Writing structure, written expressions, connecting words
• Understanding graph types such as combo charts and 3D data.
• Writing essays on different subjects, including up to date themes. For example, digital communication, social media, the increase in AI, and global health challenges (e.g. the Covid pandemic).
• Using a clear structure in writing. Introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
• Improving vocabulary by studying subject specific language
Speaking Section
• Using cue cards with a range of subjects for discussion
• Introducing up to date situations such as working from home, studying online, home schooling.
• Practicing speaking for 2 minutes uninterrupted using IELTS cue cards.
• Focussing on fluency, coherence, and natural pronunciation.
• Understanding word and sentence stress, rhythm and intonation.
• Using real-world examples to support answers.
The course will use example tests and there will also be timed sessions for students.
Teacher Support
• The course will be run by Tony Frobisher. During 28 years of teaching, Tony has gained a lot of experience in preparing students to take the IELTS test.
• All materials will be prepared and provided by the teacher. At the end of each class, materials and resources will be sent to each student.
• Each student will have the opportunity to have a 20 minute free, no obligation Zoom call to assess level and discuss the course.
• At the conclusion of the course, each student will have a full report detailing their English progress and another individual 20 minute feedback session 1:1 with the teacher.
